Gameday: Skating Saints Visit Agganis

BU concludes its Thanksgiving two-game non-conference sojourn tonight with a home ice matchup with St. Lawrence University. The game marks the first Agganis Arena appearance for the skating Saints. The teams last met two seasons ago in the Ledyard National Bank Classic at Darmouth with the Saints scoring an OT win, 4-3. The overall series between the two programs is knotted at 26-26-2. Curry's start comes up short
John Curry lost his first NHL start to the Buffalo Sabres and ex-Michigan State All-American Ryan Miller, 4-3. Curry stopped 28 shots, including several exceptional stops. Despite the four goals, Curry was solid in goal (link to video), according to media reports and the Pens Web site report:

What Worked: John Curry. The rookie made his first-career start and can’t be blamed for this loss. He made a number of key saves late in the game to keep it a tie game. Curry made two spectacular glove saves down the stretch. He played deep in his crease and had quick reactions to shots. Curry played poised and never looked
rattled.

What Didn't Work: Territory Protection. The Sabres caused a lot of havoc in front of Curry. The Buffalo game plan was to create traffic in front of Curry and get rebound opportunities. The Sabres’ first two goals were a result of Buffalo players who were positioned at the doorstep. The Sabres notched the game-winning goal late in the third period when Paul Gaustad was unchecked in the crease. The Penguins had trouble clearing Sabres out of the slot and crease
and paid for it with a few pucks in their net.
