“Starr” of the game

Led by their captains, the Terriers have established a charitable fund-raising vehicle to honor the contributions and memory of Meryl Starr Herman, the tireless, enthusiastic and much-beloved supporter of BU Hockey who passed away in September. Red bracelets bearing Meryl’s initials and “BU Hockey” (see photo) are available at Agganis Arena for donations of any amount. During home games, parents of the players are manning a table on the visitors’ bench side of the arena where the bracelets can be obtained. A video message, featuring co-captains Matt Gilroy and John McCarthy and assistant captain Brian Strait and announcing the bracelet program, is shown on the arena scoreboard during games. Each package includes this note from the hockey team:

Meryl Starr Herman was the Co-Chairperson and long time Board
Member of the BU Friends of Hockey organization. This September she passed away from thyroid cancer. The Men’s ice hockey team is asking that you wear this bracelet, especially to games, in memory of a person who worked tirelessly on our team’s behalf.

The money raised from the sale of this bracelet will help benefit
research being done at the Massachusetts General Hospital
Thyroid Cancer Center. More importantly wearing this bracelet,
will help us all remember Meryl Starr Herman, who asked for
nothing, gave everything, and will always be the first star of the
game— the one that really counts. Thank You.

Looking ahead

• Update on Chiasson: U.S.Hockey Report, covering Alex Chiasson’s commitment, points out that many colleges had been following Chiasson and that BC, Michigan and Vermont were among the finalists for his verbal. USHR quoted Northwood Prep coach Jeff Matthews saying “He’s great along the half-wall and in the corners,” and also suggests he’ll be an early round NHL draft choice next June.


• World Junior A Challenge: Max Nicastro, another 2009 recruit and Chiasson’s rival in the USHL, is playing for Team USA in the World Junior A Challenge in Camrose, Alberta. In last night’s 5-3 win over Canada East, Nicastro had an assist.
