Midweek Linkorama

I’d rather be lucky than good.” So said Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Gomez (whom I had the good fortune to work with one summer on a baseball promotion). In the vernacular of his era, Lefty, a teammate of Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, was a hoot.

Turns out that in its season-opening game against Wisconsin, the Terriers were both good and lucky. BU pulled ahead in the see-saw game on Joe Pereira's breakaway, but HockeyBuzz blogger Julie Robenhymer, who was at the Ice Breaker, has the video proof that while the late kicked-in goal by the Badgers may have been properly disallowed, an earlier shot the refs thought went off the crossbar did in fact go into the net and out in a split second. Replay was available but not in use for reviewing calls.

Robenhymer, a former Miss New Jersey, also offers some insights on the efforts of Pereira, Sahir Gill and Dave Warsofsky. Discussing Gill’s five-point performance, she points out, "What's even more impressive is the skill he's shown under pressure and in tight situations. He's got great vision, is crafty and doesn't overthink an opportunity to pass, he just does it."

Looking back
A night after scoring his first goal of the season against Philadelphia (video), former Terrier and Hockey East Rookie of the Year Brandon Yip scored the game-winning goal in the sixth round of a shootout (video) as the Avs edged the Red Wings, 5-4. After two Red Wings had hit the crossbar, Yip roofed a shot over ex-Maine goalie Jimmy Howard. Yip also assisted on the Colorado goal that knotted the score midway through the third period.

Former Hockey East Player of the Year John Curry stopped 25 of 26 shots in Wilkes Barre Scranton’s 2-1 win against Adirondack. It was Curry’s first start of the season.

Raising the banner
Friday night, the sixth ranked Terrier Women's Hockey Team will open its home season against Wayne State and will raise the program's first Hockey East Championship banner. BU won the title last Spring with a 2-1 overtime win against Connecticut. Check back for further details.
