Terriers fall in OT, 5-4; Will face UNH in quarterfinals

In the regular season finale, Terriers fell in overtime to Northeastern, 5-4. In a back and forth game that saw BU overcome Husky one-goal leads three times, the game-winner came 2:35 in the extra session on rebound converted by former Terrier Vinny Saponari, who ironically beat his former roommate, Grant Rollheiser, on the play.

Terriers mounted a 40-shot attack and received goals from Garrett Noonan (2), Chris Connolly, and Sean Escobedo, but missed several opportunities to take control of the game including on a 5-3 power play in the waning minutes of regulation.

The inconsistent effort cost BU the second seed in the Hockey East playoffs. Although the Terriers finished tied for second with Lowell, the Riverhawks get the #2 seed because they won the season series, 2-1. BU will host New Hampshire in the best-of-three quarterfinals beginning Friday night.

Looking ahead
2012 recruit Sean Maguire stopped 21 shots in Powell River’s 4-2 win over Surrey in BCHL action. Maguire, with a 2.36 GAA and .912 save percentage, earned his 15th win.

2012 recruit Matt O’Connor made 29 saves in Youngstown’s 6-1 thumping of the NTDP U17s, earning his 25th victory in 40 games.

2013 recruit Danny O’Regan scored a goal and added an assist at St. Sebastian’s thumped Kent, 6-3, in the semifinals of the NEPSAC Martin/Earl Division Tournament.

Women’s program
It was a much better Saturday for the #9 women’s team, which advanced to the Hockey East title game with a convincing 5-2 semifinal win against #4BC, led by a pair of goals by sophomore Marie-Philip Poulin. Sophomore Louis Warren, and juniors Jill Cardella and Isabel Menard also scored for BU.

BU (22-13-1, 14-7-0 WHEA) will face fourth-seeded Providence in the title tilt today at 1 p.m. The taped game will air on NESN at 4:30 p.m. Terriers will be making their second appearance in a conference championship game and this one will match two coaches who are former BU netminders, Brian Durocher for BU and Bob Deraney for the Friars. A win would give BU an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
