Looking ahead

2014 recruit JJ Piccinich scored a goal and an assist for Team Red in a 4-0 shutout of Team Kelly at USA Hockey’s Select 17 Development Camp in Buffalo. The former North Jersey Avalanche standout, who will play a second USHL season in Youngstown before arriving at BU, had two goals and four assists in six games for Team Red, which finished second in the tournament.

2015 recruit Bobo Carpenter scored his second goal of the tournament in Team Forest’s 5-4 loss to Gold. Carpenter will be a junior at Austin Prep next season.

Last week, the Boston Hockey Blog reported that newly name assistant coach Steve Greeley would be in Buffalo to scout the Select 17s.
►The Boston Globe spoke with 2014 recruit Shane Starrett about his development prior to last weekend’s NHL Entry Draft. The 6-5 netminder, who had a 1.96 GAA and .916 save percentage in 42 games for South Kent last season, had been the 15th ranked North American goalie by Central Scouting, but was not selected in the draft. Starrett is expected to be the starting goalie for USHL Sioux Falls next season and recently impressed at the Stampede’s tryout camp

►His NHL draft year is still two seasons away, but 2014 recruit Jack Eichel acknowledged to the Lowell Sun that being picked high in the first round is one of his goals. Eichel, who last season had a 19-15-34 line in 36 games with the NTDP U17s and added 18 points (10g, 8a) in 22 games when called up the U18s, was a member of the silver medal winning Team USA squad at the World U18 Championships. Eichel, who committed to BU in April 2012, told the Sun:

"Obviously I was excited to play for coach (Jack) Parker.  He's a legend. But obviously I'm excited to play for coach (David) Quinn. I think he's going to be really good for me."

The Sun reports that “Eichel took extra classes last summer and is again taking extra classes this summer, with the goal of returning to Ann Arbor as a senior. He plans to play one more year with the national program and then attend Boston University in the fall of 2014.”

Looking back

Former Terrier standout Joe Sacco, who was relieved of head coaching duties for Colorado last month, didn’t stay unemployed very long. He was named an assistant to Buffalo Sabres coach Ron Rolston.

Assessing Kevin Shattenkirk’s new four-year $17-million contract with St. Louis, BleacherReport focused on the consistency shown during the first three seasons of his pro career. The former BU captain and second team All-American, was a first-round draft pick of Colorado in 2007.

Coming soon
Look for the first installment of a new "Where are they now?" feature on former Terriers who have moved on to life after hockey. First up will be an All-American from the Terrier offensive dynamo teams of the mid-70s that dominated the ECAC.
