Penalty-shot goal sinks Terriers

Strong goaltending by sophomore goalie Matt O’Connor kept #4 Michigan at bay for nearly 49 minutes. However, a power play goal by Tyler Motte on a slick backdoor pass, followed by a penalty-shot goal by Alex Guptill gave the Wolverines a 2-1 edge they wouldn’t relinquish. In the final minutes, sophomore Mike Moran hit the post and freshman Nick Roberto’s deflection went just wide.

After sophomore  Danny O’Regan rang a first-period shot off the post on a shorthanded breakaway, BU had taken a 1-0 lead late in the period on the second goal of the season by Robbie Baillargeon (photo) . From the circle to the Michigan goalie’s left, the freshman wing rifled home a pass from co-captain Garrett Noonan. BU was outshot 14-6—largely due to three Terrier penalties. No scoring in the second period, but Michigan had an even larger shot advantage, 16-6. Michigan brought its shot total to 44 in the final period, while BU finished with 19.

O’Connor’s 42 saves kept BU in the game, earning him third-star honors. His record drops to 2-1.O’Regan continues to shine on faceoffs, winning 16 of 30 to finish on the plus-side again.

The Wolverines spent nearly 10 minutes on the power play, accumulating 14 shots. Coach David Quinn (video interview) praised his goalie’s performance, but was clearly irritated by the Terriers’ six penalties taken—including the second in as many games for too many men on the ice—and turn-overs on offense due to decision-making mistakes.
