Rensselaer defeats BU, 3-1

A pair of goals by Rensselaer senior forward Ryan Haggerty were the difference in a 3-1 Engineer’s win at Agganis Arena, dealing BU its first loss of the season. The visitors struck twice early in the opening period. When the Terrier defense couldn’t corral a loose puck in front of the BU net, Matt Tinordi knocked it home for a 1-0 lead. A minute and a half later the lead was doubled when Haggerty’s power play blast from the blueline beat Sean Maguire.

The Terriers found their game in the middle period, outshooting the Engineers16 to 8 but they didn’t get on the board until the 19 minute mark. Ahti Oksanen sent freshman Kevin Duane in on a breakaway, which he converted for his first college goal. Oksanen now has five assists in three games.

The momentum BU hoped to carry into the final period was dissipated when Haggerty scored off a faceoff, just 48 seconds into the period.

Head coach David Quinn said:

I liked our effort. The part I’m disappointed with was our puck movement. I thought we were trying to make too many home run passes. I think we took five or six icings because we were looking for that long pass and it just isn’t there. You’ve got to pass the puck when you should, not when you have to.

One bright spot for BU was in the faceoff circle, which the Terriers dominated, winning 43 of 73 draws.BU also enjoyed an overall 32-29 shot advantage.

Looking back

 Women’s Team

Terriers broke a 2-2 tie midway through the second period with three unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 win over Robert Morris. Sophomore Sarah Lefort led the way with a pair of goals, while Captain Louis Warren, Taylor Holze and freshman Samantha Sutherland each scored once. Kayla Tutino and Maddie Elia each contributed two assists.

Senior Kerrin Sperry stopped 34 shots to earn her second win in three starts.
