Terriers defeat Holy Cross, move to 2-0

Cason Hohmann’s power play goal in the second period was the margin of victory as BU defeated Holy Cross, 3-2, to complete a weekend sweep. The junior center converted the rebound of a shot by co-captain Garrett Noonan, who earned the game’s first star. Matt Lane also drew an assist.

Noonan also set up the game’s first goal, sending Danny O’Regan in alone on a first-period breakaway, which the sophomore converted with a slick move to the backhand. After Holy Cross tied the score on a second-period power play, freshman Nick Roberto registered his first goal of the season, aided by Ahti Oksanen’s fourth assist of the weekend and by Kevin Duane, playing his first game and displaying some tenacious forechecking.

Hohmann’s goal extended the lead to 3-1 before the Crusaders’ Adam Schmitt cut the lead in half early in the final period. Matt O’Connor, stopped eleven other shots in the third period and 21 shots overall to gain his first win of the season.

Head coach David Quinn told the Boston Hockey Blog he was pleased with the team's effort, adding:

“We have a vision of how we want to play night in and night out and how we ultimately want to look. I thought we took a big step forward toward that… I thought tonight, like I said, I thought there were a lot of signs of us moving forward, which I think we have to got keep going.”

BU is back in action next weekend with home games against ECAC rival Rennselaer and the new Big Ten conference’s Wisconsin.

Looking back 
Kevin Shattenkirk assisted on two goals in the Blues 5-3 win against the Rangers.

Corey Trivino scored a goal in regulation—assisted by Sean Escobedo—and then tallied in the shootout as Stockton edged San Francisco, 4-3, in ECHL action.

Women’s Team

Terriers earned their first victory of the season with an 3-2 overtime win at Union College. Sophomore Rebecca Russo’s goal 3:13 into the extra session—her second of the game and third of the season—completed a Terrier comeback. Captain Louise Warren’s extra-attacker goal with 32 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. The Dutchwomen had taken a 2-1 lead midway through the third.  

Senior Kerrin Sperry stopped 27 shots as BU outshot Union by a 49-29 margin.

Terrier will remain on the road with a pair of games at Robert Morris next weekend.

Former BU defenseman Tara Watchorn scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Terrier teammate Catherine Ward, as Canda edged Team USA, 3-2, in the first of six pre-Olympic games between the two teams.
