Eagles upend Terriers; BU adds a blueliner for 2015

Turnovers plagued the Terriers last night as they were thumped by #8 BC, 5-1 at a sold out Agganis Arena. The Eagles were led by Johnny Gaudreau, who tallied a goal and two assists.

The visitors dominated the opening period, heavily outshooting BU and getting a pair of goals from Gaudreau and Austin Cangelosi in a two-and-a-half minute span. BU halved the lead on a second-period power play when Robbie Baillargeon’s wrist shot glanced off Nick Roberto and past BC’s Thatcher Demko. But Bill Arnold’s goal following a Gaudreau rush restored the two-goal margin.

Two more Eagle goals within a minute midway through the third put the game out of reach.

Matt O’Connor stopped 35 shots, while Demko turned away 22.

The College Blog: Analysis

Looking ahead
BU received its second verbal for 2015 this week. Speedy Chicago Mission defenseman Vasili Kolias, who was invited to last Spring’s NTDP tryout camp, was #8 on OverTheBoard’s list of top uncommitted players.

Kolias was USHR’s top-rated defenseman at last summer’s USA Hockey Select 16 tournament and earned a spot on the U.S. Select U17 team that played in the Five Nation’s Tournament in Switzerland this past August.

USHR: Vas Kolias (Chicago Mission U16/Black) 5-9/150 — Kolias, a top defenseman who we have been raving about for the last couple of years, is still somehow uncommitted. The positive on him is that he brings an offensive dimension that is incredibly hard to find. An effortless skater, he plays a very loose, stress-free game and is able to bring the puck up ice beautifully and create offense. The negative on him is that he plays a loose, care-free game which isn’t exactly what you want on the ice when protecting a one or two goal lead. Indiana Ice (USHL) draft pick. Made the Five Nations team.

A left-shot, Kolias joins NTDP blueliner Charlie McAvoy, and forwards Bobo Carpenter and Maxim Letunov in BU’s 2015 recruit class.

2014 recruit J.J. Piccinich and Letunov scored shootout goals for Youngstown, as the Phantoms beat Fargo, 4-3. Piccinich’s score was the game-winner.
Looking back

Wade Megan scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season—both assisted by Vinny Saponari—as ECHL Cincinnati beat Kalamazoo, 5-2.

Ex-Terriers Chris Bourque and Chris Connolly each tallied an assist for Team USA which fell to Slovakia, 4-3 in a shootout, in the first round of the Deutschland Cup in Munich. Former BU head coach Jack Parker is coaching Team USA, assisted by Mike Bavis and Ben Smith.

New England Hockey Journal talked with Dallas Stars wing Alex Chiasson about his recent trip back to Boston.

Women’s Team
Terriers begin a weekend series with Maine this afternoon, hosting the Black Bears at Walter Brown Arena with puck drop set for 4 p.m. Tomorrow’s game starts at 3 p.m. #10 BU carries a 7-1-1 record into the game and have reeled off five straight wins. Captain Louise Warren and Sarah Lefort lead the team with 10 points apiece.
