O'Regan, Eichel shine in WJC exhibition game--UPDATED





The U.S. Junior National Team dropped a 4-2 exhibition game to Sweden yesterday, as it prepares for the World Junior Championships, which began this Thursday in Malmo, Sweden.  Terrier sophomore Danny O’Regan scored Team USA’s second goal, deflecting home Jacob Slavin’s slapshot. 2014 recruit Jack Eichel was named USA Player of the Game. Team USA, whose roster also includes BU sophomore Matt Grzelcyk, plays its final pre-WJC exhibition tomorrow against Finland.

NHL Network is televising all U.S. games in the 2014 WJCs, beginning with next Thursday’s preliminary round game against The Czech Republic.


Meanwhile, the NTDP U17s, whose roster includes 2015 recruit Charles McAvoy, will begin play in the World U17 Hockey Challenge in Nova Scotia on December 28. Games will be streamed lived and available as archives on FastHockey. 
 

Looking ahead
2014 recruit Shane Starrett stopped 23 of 24 shots to lead Portland to a 5-1 win against Islanders Hockey Clubs in USPHL Premier League action. The victory was the 6'5" netminder’s third win since joining the Junior Pirates earlier this month. He has a 2.18 GAA.

The Scouting Report posted its list of top USHL prospects for the 2014 draft and NTDP defenseman Johnathan MacLeod, a BU 2014 recruit, is #7.

Looking back
Former BU assistant captain Brian Strait scored his first NHL goal as the Islanders edged the Rangers, 5-3 at Madison Square Garden.  The blueliner from Waltham, Mass., now in his second season on Long Island, knotted the game at three apiece with a one-timer from just above the circle midway through the second period.

Women’s Team
The Toronto Globe & Mail profiles Marie-Philip Poulin who is rehabbing an ankle injury and hopes to return soon to the Canadian Olympic team as it prepares to defend its Olympic title. Four years ago in Vancouver, B.C., Poulin, who is taking a year’s leave from BU, scored both goals for the host team in its gold-medal game win against Team USA.
