IBUH-Episode 21; Quinn's RI roots

Episode21 of Inside BU Hockey features Bernie Corbett’s interviews with Coach David Quinn, hockey reporter Scott McLaughlin and sophomore wing Nick Roberto. McLaughlin, who covered Terrier hockey for The Daily Free Press, later was a reporter for College Hockey News and now writes on professional and college hockey and hosts a weekly College Puckcast for WEEI.com. Roberto (photo) arrived at BU after two seasons at Kimball Union Academy where he was named USHR’s Prep Forward of the Year in 2012-13 after posting 23 goals and 25 assists. He was a teammate of current Terriers Doyle Somerby and AJ Greer at KUA. Last year, he scored 18 points for the Terriers.

►Providence Journal’s Mark Divver reports on the coaching careers of Rhode Islanders David Quinn and Islanders coach Jack Capuano, who were teammates as Bantams and in prep school.

►SB Nation has compiled its ranking of the top 100 NHL prospects now playing NCAA hockey (both drafted and undrafted).  The list includes seven Terriers headed by #1 ranked Jack Eichel. Also listed: Brandon Hickey (23), John MacLeod (41), Brien Diffley (61), Danny O’Regan (86),  Greer (87) and Somerby (99).

►BU Assistant AD Brian Kelley noted that this season’s Terrier squad is the first to complete the regular season without consecutive losses since 1997-98. The last team to do so for a full season was the 1977-1978 national champions.

Looking ahead
2015 recruit Maxim Letunov’s shootout goal made the USHL’s weekly highlights reel. The 6-3 center from Moscow had his NHL rights traded from St. Louis to Arizona earlier this week.

2017 recruit David Farrance (photo) scored twice and added an assist to power Victor, NY, High School to a 6-1 win over Brockport, advancing the Blue Devils to the state quarterfinals.

The Farrance goal was a work of art as he picked off a short pass in the Brockport zone, and worked his way to the front of the goal. When he dropped his left shoulder on a fake, he also dropped Brockport goalie Riley Emmerson to his knees and Farrance’s shot clanked in off the crossbar.

A similar spurt in the second gave Victor two more goals and a 4-0 lead. And just when it looked like Farrance’s first goal couldn’t be any prettier, he outdid himself with pure power. From the blue line to Emmerson’s left, Farrance launched a rocket that found the far top corner at 6:30.

2018 recruit Jake Wise scored a goal and added four assists as Central Catholic defeated Austin Prep, 7-4, in the Massachusetts Super 8, knotting their series at one apiece. The freshman’s shorthanded goal in the second period was the game-winner. 

Looking back

Former BU All-American Colin Wilson scored his 20^th goal of the season for Nashville, but the Predators dropped a 4-3 decision to the Islanders.

Former BU All-American and NHLer Freddy Meyer will be on the coaching staff for the 2015 National Team Development Program evaluation camp in Ann Arbor, March 20-24. Meyer, an alum of the NTDP program, scored 72 points in four seasons at BU and 73 points in 281 NHL games with four teams. The roster of invitees will be announced next week.

Women's Team

Three-time Hockey East tournament champion BU will look to defend its title this weekend in Hyannis. The #2 seed Terriers take on #3 Northeastern Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

High scoring BU freshmen Victoria Bach and Rebecca Leslie were named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team. Bach leads all NCAA rookies with 19 goals and had a Hockey East leading 13 goals in league play. Leslie, who was Hockey East Rookie of the Month in October, has scored 29 points (14G, 15A). In addition, Hockey East announced that senior captain Marie-Philip Poulin was named the league’s top defensive forward.
