Quinn signs five year extension; Draft Day: Shuffling Off to Buffalo?

Boston University has signed head hockey coach David Quinn to a five-year contract extension after guiding the Terriers to a Hockey East championship and to the Frozen Four title game in his second season at the helm. Following BU’s 28-8-5 season, Quinn had been named Hockey East and New England Coach of the Year and was runner-up for the Spencer Penrose Award, which recognizes the top coach among all Div. 1 coaches.

Quinn was named head coach in March 2013, succeeding legendary Jack Parker who had spent 40 seasons behind the Terriers bench. A former standout defenseman for BU, he’d been an assistant to Parker before leaving to be an AHL head coach and an NHL assistant coach (in Colorado).

A 1984 first-round draft pick of the Minnesota North Stars, Quinn spent three seasons on the Terrier blueline (1984-87) before his career was interrupted by a blood disorder. He began coaching at Northeaster with stops at Nebraska-Omaha and USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program before becoming associate head coach to Parker in 2004.

2015 NHL Entry Draft

Seven current and future Terriers will look to hear their names called in the NHL Entry Draft tonight and tomorrow in Sunrise, Fla. NBC Sports Network and SportsNet will air both days’ activities beginning tonight at 7 p.m. E.T.

Freshman center Jack Eichel, ranked #2 by Central Scouting, will be the first BU name called when the Sabres select him with the second pick of the first round.  The other draft eligible are 2015 recruit center Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson (ranked #31 among N.Americans), 2015 recruit left wing Jordan Greenway (#47), freshman wing AJ Greer (#69), 2016 recruit center John McDermott (#106), freshman defenseman Brien Diffley (#136) and unranked center Robert Carpenter, a 2015 recruit who co-led the USHL in goals this season with 35.

Eichel, who is reportedly close to a decision on whether he’ll sign a pro contract or return to BU for a second season, talked with NHL.com yesterday during media day activities.
