Game Day: Terriers host Michigan--UPDATED

#11 Terriers host #12 Michigan in a two-game series at Agganis Arena. Tonight’s game is a 6 p.m. start and is part of the ASN/NESN TV package. (More below)

The BU-Michigan rivalry that saw five meetings in the first decade of the 2000's, resumed in 2013 when the Terriers visited Yost, losing 2-1. Last year, BU was the host and rallied to win, 3-2 (video). The teams have split the last eight games.

Tonight’s contest might be called a USA NTDP alumni game as seven Terriers and six Wolverines are alums of that program. Of that Michigan group, junior Tyler Motte leads the team with six goals, while freshman Brendan Warren has six assists. Two other freshmen, Cooper Marody and Kyle Connor have nine points apiece.

For BU, Connor LaCouvee, coming off two strong efforts against Providence, will be back in goal. Charlie McAvoy, who was suspended for last Saturday’s game, returns to the line-up. Nikolas Olsson remains out with an upper-body injury. Defenseman Brien Diffley will move up front to fill his spot.

Looking back
First year New Jersey Head Coach John Hynes—a member of the Terriers’ 1995 National Championship team—sat down with Inside Devils’ Hockey’s Julie Robenhymer  (video) to discuss his transition from AHL to NHL and the team’s early success. An accompanying article describes how an injury that ended his playing career led him to coaching, beginning as an unofficial assistant to Jack Parker, who recalled:

"Everyone loved to be around him. But beyond that, he was a great student of the game. He had to be because he wasn't overly gifted talent-wise. He was a very smart player, very cerebral and that held true for him when he became a coach too."

Kevin Shattenkirk scored for the second time in as many games as St. Louis edged Buffalo in a shootout, 3-2. Jack Eichel assisted on the Sabres’ first goal.

Former BU captain Garrett Noonan has been recalled from ECHL Cincinnati to AHL Milwaukee, a Nashville affiliate.

Women's Team

Coming off a two-game sweep of Maine, the Terriers play a home-and-home with WHEA’s newest member, Merrimack. It’s also the first time BU will play the Warriors. Tonight’s game at Lawler Rink in North Andover starts at 7 p.m. Saturday’s game at Walter Brown Arena has a 3 p.m. puck drop.

Junior Maddie Elia (photo) has been wielding a hot stick and leads BU with 10 goals, while sophomore Rebecca Leslie is the top point-getter with 20. Senior Rebecca Russo has 17. Junior Victoria Hanson and sophomore Erin O’Neil have been splitting the goaltending duties.
