Home cooking yields 3rd shutout at Agganis as BU beats NU, 3-0--UPDATED


After spending much of the first period killing penalties, the #4 Terriers went on offense, scoring three second-period goals—two from freshman Patrick Harper and one from classmate Kieffer Bellows—en route to a 3-0 win against Northeastern at Agganis Arena. With the win, BU, which has yet to yield a goal in three home games, claims three conference points from its home-and-home series with the Huskies.

The shutout turned out to be a shared one as freshman Jake Oettinger had to be relieved by junior Connor LaCouvee for four minutes in the final period when Oettinger’s skate blade needed repairs.

BU broke a scoreless tie seconds past the midpoint of the middle period with a pretty goal on the rush with Jordan Greenway sliding the puck to Clayton Keller who redirected it to Harper at the bottom of the right circle. The former Avon Old Farms standout ripped it past NU's Ryan Ruck for a 1-0 lead.


Thirty-two seconds later, Charlie McAvoy controlled the puck across the tops of the circles and found Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson alone down low for a one-timer that Ruck stopped, but Bellows backhanded the rebound home.  The Harper-Keller-Greenway combination scored again at the 17-minute mark with Harper converting his own rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

With the Huskies pressing to cut into BU’s lead, the Oettinger-LaCouvee tandem stopped all 11 third period shots and finished with 27 saves.
“We’ve got some talented players for sure, and when you have opportunities they have the ability to capitalize on them,” Quinn said. “I thought we were opportunistic, made a couple really nice plays and it ends up in the back of the net and suddenly the tone of the game changes.”
With points in all seven BU games this season, Harper is atop the BU scoring chart with 11 points (4G, 7A).

Bobo Carpenter won 10 of 11 draws to lead BU’s 35-to-16 domination of the face off circle. 

After yielding two power play goals in seven chances during Friday night’s 4-4 tie with the Huskies, BU killed all five NU power play opportunities on Saturday evening.

Looking ahead
2017 recruit David Farrance scored a power play goal and added an assist when his slapshot was deflected home in Team USA’s 3-2 win over Finland at the Five Nations Tournament in Plymouth, Michigan. With the victory and a 3-1 record, Team USA claimed the tournament title. For the blueliner from Victor, NY, the two points gave him nine on the season (3G, 6A), best among U18 defensemen.

Looking back
Former BU captain and All-American Kevin Shattenkirk assisted on an overtime goal as St. Louis edged Columbus, 2-1.  And Colin Wilson, also an All-American and teammate of Shattenkirk on the 2009 national championship team, assisted on a goal in Nashville’s 3-2 loss to Carolina.

 Nick Bonino is the fifth former Terrier to score an NHL goal this season.


Women’s Team
Held scoreless for forty minutes, the Terriers exploded for five third-period goals and upset #4 Boston College,5-3, at Walter Brown Arena to gain a split in their weekend series. Junior Victoria Bach scored twice and freshman Deziray De Sousa’s score at 9:58 proved to be the game-winner. Grad student Mary Parker and junior transfer Nina Rodgers also found the net for BU.  Junior Erin O’Neil stopped 34 Eagle shots to earn the win.
