US, Canada, Finland head to WJC medal round; 3 Tkachuk assists spur Team USA



Freshman Brady Tkachuk assisted on three goals—including the game-winner—in Team USA’s 5-4 win against Finland in the World Junior Championships in Buffalo. With the win the U.S. nails down second place in Group A and will face Russia, the number three finisher in Group B in the medal-round quarterfinals on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Canada, #1 in Group A, with sophomore Dante Fabbro, will play Switzerland while Finland, with Kasper Kotkansalo, takes on the Czech Republic, also on Tuesday.

With six points (2G, 4A), Tkachuk, who logged a team-high 22 minutes against Finland, is tied for second in tournament scoring. US Coach Bob Motzko noted:


"He's just scratching the surface. He's one of the guys who plays the right way every shift he's out there. That's what these athletes need to watch and learn from. He carries himself like a pro and plays like it; a great attitude."

Looking back
Three former Terriers—Kevin Shattenkirk, Jack Eichel and Evan Rodrigues—will be on the ice in today’s Winter Classic game between the Rangers and Sabres at Citi Field in New York. Also on hand will be former Terrier forward and assistant coach Steve Greeley, now assistant general manager in Buffalo.

Matt Nieto's sixth goal of the season (video) was the game-winner in Colorado's 6-1 win against the Islanders. Colin Wilson contributed an assist for the Avs.
